How does it work?

  1. You upload photos of your looks, and browse others.
  2. "Hype" a.k.a. vote up whatever inspires you—community "hype" determines which outfits show up on the front page.
  3. If people hype your looks, you gain "karma" which builds your reputation in the community.

  • Enhance or reinvent your image through feedback.
  • Promote yourself and your blog, photography, boutique, etc.

What is a "look?"

A "look" is a user-submitted photograph that displays the user's outfit, and, if he or she chooses, a description of what they're wearing and where they got it.

How do I post a look?

Click the "POST A LOOK" tab on the main navigation menu above.

How do I edit or delete a look?

The edit look button (cog icon) and delete button (trash bin icon) are located to the left of the main photo on your look page.

Are there any rules regarding what I can post?

Yes, actually, there are 10 of them:

  1. Full body photos are required.
Any photo that fails to display at least head-to-knees or neck-to-toe will be deleted.
  2. Outfits must be unobstructed, clearly visible and free from unnecessary distractions.
If an outfit is partially obstructed from view or not FULLY and CLEARLY visible for ANY reason (blurriness, poor lighting, subject fails to take up a significant portion of the photo) it will be deleted. Excessive photo editing in the form of skewing, stretching, colorizing, or adding gratuitous text is also prohibited.
  3. No more than one look per photo.
Photos that display multiple people or multiple outfits for any reason will be removed.
  4. You must be in the photo.
Only photos of yourself are allowed. Photos of strangers, friends, models, people you styled, etc. will all be removed. However, if you are an independent designer, crafter, or artist, you may post photos of other people if and only if they are modeling clothes made by you.
  5. No more than 3 views of an outfit.
Collaged posts are allowed but must contain no more than 3 separately combined images.
  6. DO NOT repost photos.
Posting photos that were already posted previously in an attempt to get more hype is not allowed. We notice and so does the community. Repeat posts will be deleted.
  7. DO NOT post ads or spam.
If items in your photo are for sale, you must be modeling them yourself. Blatant advertising is not tolerated and violators will be banned from the community.
  8. DO NOT post photos that don't belong to you.
Impersonators and users who post photos they do not own the rights to will be immediately banned from the community
  9. No nudity.
This is not a porn site.
  10. No photos of children.
This is not a kiddie fashion site.

How do I find and vote for looks?

You can visit the NEW section to discover recently added looks. If you see entries you like, vote them up by clicking the corresponding "hype" button.

How is the HOT page sorted?

The HOT page is sorted based on real-time popularity determined by the community. Users vote for looks by clicking the "hype" button underneath each entry's score box. Once a look has earned a critical mass of "hype", it becomes popular and jumps to the HOT page. As a look on the HOT page gains more hype, it moves up in position. Conversely, as it gets older, it moves down in position.

What is "karma"?

When a look is "hyped" the person who posted it is rewarded with a karma point. In the same way that popular outfits are voted to the top, the users who post them get increases in karma. Every LOOKBOOK.nu user affects one another's karma equally, and this is how members reward each other for posting looks that are stylish, unique, and interesting.

What is Average karma?

Average karma is simply a user's total karma divided by the number of looks he or she has posted. The higher a user's average karma, the greater the user's reputation. On the NEW page, the Karma Filter uses average karma in part to determine how much each look is shown.

What is the Karma Filter?

When the Karma Filter is turned on, the NEW page shows more looks by members who have established a strong, positive reputation within the community (as indicated by high average karma per look) and less looks by members who have not. Due to the high volume of looks added each day, the karma filter was added to ensure that looks from established and proven members are given greater priority and protected from being immediately buried by looks from newer, unproven members. The Karma Filter can optionally be turned off to show looks posted by all users, regardless of their average karma.

NOTE: Looks from users with lower reputation will still be visible, but shown to a smaller portion of the community.

What is the difference between "strict" and "moderate" Karma Filter?

When the Karma Filter is on "strict" it shows much less looks from users with lower average karma than when it is on "moderate."

What is reputation?

Your reputation on the site helps to determine how much your look is shown to the community when the Karma Filter is turned on. The visibility of each look you post is calculated based on your reputation (i.e. average karma) as well as the amount of hype each individual look receives. Looks by members who have high average karma start off visible to the entire community, while looks by members with low average karma will start off visible to a portion of the community. As a look becomes hyped, it will become more visible.

To build a good reputation on LOOKBOOK.nu, post high quality photos of outfits that display your personal style at its very best. You can maximize your chances of receiving karma by posting clear (not blurry), well-lit, and not-excessively-photoshopped photos that display your entire body. It is also helpful to promote your new looks by sharing it with friends on Facebook, Twitter and readers of your blog so that it gets more exposure and more hype.

I posted a look. Why doesn't it show up on the NEW page?

You are most likely viewing the New page with the Karma Filter on. The Karma Filter is programmed to show looks by users with high average karma more frequently than users with low average karma. You can turn the karma filter off to see looks from all users, regardless of their average karma.

How do I down-vote a look?

There is no down-voting (or negative hyping) because the purpose of the site is to promote a diverse and open-minded community. If you find an entry with spam, questionable content, or just has nothing to do with fashion, click the "flag" link within each entry and it will be flagged for possible removal.

What should I do in case of offensive feedback?

You have complete control of the comments on your entries and you may flag or delete any spam, offensive, or negative comments. We will review all flagged comments for violation of our Terms of Service and ban offenders when necessary.

How do I check my private messages?

Private messages are delivered directly to your email. You can respond to private messages directly by sending an email reply. Check your spam folder if you can't find them.
