"My sister's keeper" had a pretty unexpected ending. (It was diffrent from the film..)
It kid of turned everything up side down. But I guess that's whan Jodi Picoult wanted, to surprise the readers..
I didn't like it though.

Endings are the hardest part of a book to write imo, so I tend to cut the author a break a lot of the time. I generally dislike epilogue endings; I don't need everything wrapped up in a neat little package, thanks.

I hate those ending where it seems like the book just suddenly stops, without actually ending. Although I love China Mieville's books, several of his (but not his most recent one) do that, and so does Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake. There's others I can't remember now, too.
I thought 1984 ended pretty well, though, Jepina and Illiana.

Really?
I loved that ending (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close), it's my favorite book ever. Haha.
I thought it was beautiful, dissolving, sort of slipping away as you read it. Like a dream when you try to explain it. Idk, I just liked it. :)

The Awakening, by Kate Chopin.
I do NOT understand why people say this is an "empowering" book, or even a good one... The lady pussied out in the end and passively died after fucking up her life and everyone else's, pretty predictable and pretty boring. And maybe it's just my 21st-century tastes, but the writing was just a pain in the ass to get through...
Yeah, maybe its actual publication by a female writer is "empowering," but I find the book itself to be on the lame side.

i don't get the hate for "1984" and "fahrenheit 451." i loved "the road" also. there's nothing stagnant about what mccarthy evokes. that is how i know he is a genius.
the most unsatisfying ending comes when a book you are truly absorbing has no more pages left to turn.

My friend was bugging me for ages to read The Time Travelers Wife and I thought it was terrible, the book dragged on so much and the ending was soo predictable. I like books that actually make you feel for the characters and that one did not succeed. The film was even more terrible so I would recommend it!

The ending to the His Dark Materials trilogy is just wrong. So well written, exactly as the author had intended it to be, but excruciating. The ending to a series should not make you vow never to read any of it again *sniff* I don't want to talk about it.

Not exactly a book, more a short story but 'The Withered Arm' by Thomas Hardy was dreadful. One of those that come across as though he was really bored of writing and had no ideas so he just thought "Fuck it!". Another ending that I think is dreadful is "Romeo and Juliet" - Shakespeare. I know there'll be a lot of people who disagree with me but I truly believe good ol' Will was having an off day when he wrote the final act. Love x

Villette by Charlotte Bronte. I felt really dismayed when I finished it. Almost the whole book was spent building up to something, but in the end it was all just torn down. But it did make the rest of the book a ton more believable. It was almost sort of necessary.

I was going to say that.
I am a die-hard Harry Potter fan but from the age of 11, I wanted him to sacrifice himself and die for the greater good, all Jesus Christ-stylee. I was so passionate about how much I wanted him to die.
And then what do I get? "All was well"? Fuck off!

Yeah, I read and loved Potter since I was, let's see, 5 (bloody hell), and I don't remember when I decided I wanted Potter dead for the greater good (I don't think that far ahead like you xD) but I agree. Nothing's self-sacrificingly stylish as self-sacrificing Jesus-Christ-style!

The ending of "Hello Mr God This Is Anna" was quite shocking. The book is about a man that finds a little orphan girl that is stunningly intelligent. The book is about how that little girl of five years teaches the man how to see and understand the world.
In the end - Anna just dies.

Books with terrible endings are the worst thing ever. A few months ago I was reading, "The Phantom of Manhattan" by Frederick Forsooth (I think) and the ending was the worst! It wasn't even how it ended that made me mad, it was the way it was written. There was no climax; it was so monotone and unemotional I wanted to scream. Thankfully, I didn't spend too much money on the book...
