i agree on almost everything :)
but i somehow can understand the thing with the nice photography. because right now, when i look around LB, its hard to find an outfit which doesn't look like some i have seen before.
and a nice phorography just brings more attention to your eyes.
but it sucks cause not everyone has that much money or a photographer as a friend,
but that's just how it is in life ;D

It think there are several reasons for getting hyped. But staying true to yourself and your own style will make the experience more enjoyable. It may take some time to build a fan base, but if you enjoy fashion and doing the work to put together a style and take quality photos, then it will all come to you without the pressure of feeling like you have to be hyped. I have seen many great pictures/styles not get hyped, and some that are not so great get a 1000 hypes. Hypes can be overrated, so don't worry about it...enjoy the art of style/fashion and the experience will be gratifying.

Haha I think some people here are not getting the sarcasm. I think (I may be wrong) when people say you have to be
a) skinny
b) beautiful
c) have a pro photographer

they are merely pointing out how superficial the users of Lookbook are (sadly, that includes you and I. We're here, aren't we?). It's sad, but it's the truth, if you're all of the above, you can wear a white shirt, jeans and FLIP FLOPS and you'd still get hundreds of Hypes.

I think it helps to take good quality pictures with pretty scenery, and ive noticed ive had a lot more hypes since i started putting thought into the entire look.. that is location, title, and obviously most importantly what im wearing. also turning off your filter and giving underappreciated lookbookers hypes they deserve helps. :)

I find lookbook such a hit/miss. I have had 3 looks that have had like 100 hype + and others like 10/20. I think a good photo helps and timing i.e when you add your look... 6/7 pm seems to work well! Guess there are more people browsing the site.

I don't mind commenting people really helps... maybe thats just me...

oh and posting looks regularly always seems to help! (not that I do, but from big lookbookers it's what I gather)

I generally don't like to spend much time on this sites hyping looks myself, although fashion is pretty much my life I go on here to share my own fashion rather than acknowledge other peoples styles so my style really is it's own.

I don't really think there's a 'trick' to getting hypes...

You have to have a good look, obviously - this site is for fashion. I guess taking good pictures with good quality helps...especially if it's done prefessional. Weight is not an issue...today when i was browsing around lookbook i came across an 'overweight' woman with an amazing look.

To me, that's actually inspirational. I do get sick of seeing skinny skinny day in and day out. It was refreshing i really pleasing to see...so, personally, size doesn't matter unless you're fussy in a bad way.

Creating an invidual style is also a way to gain hypes and fans. I see LookBook as working on my style and experimenting...getting inspired, which is kind-of bad in a way because it's rapid and not monotone but it benefits myself.

I don't have a good camera, in fact it's a very basic one...to make my pictures look 'attractive' i edit...maybe way too much but it hide the bad quality.

I agree that some looks have hype that are not well deserved but maybe they are...it's got alot to do with personal opinion.

Also...communication. Hype the looks you like and comment when you feel you should. Using hearts daily is also a good thing to do :)
it's ok to be generous.

You just got to work and be active.

You need a really good camera to get mega hypes. People hype the general aesthetics of the image, not just the outfit. My camera sucks unfortunately.

I think that the camera helps, but that's not the one and only reason for a massive number of hypes. You gotta have something GOOD to show in those pictures, doesn't matter if it's a great pro edited photo or not. So,work the clothes and you'll ~probably~ get the hypes that you deserve for it.

^ Preach it!

I really agree with what they both have said. If the people up there in the 'hot' section are there because they are just skinny, what's the whole point? Nonetheless, to get up there, they've put in effort to get a good photographer/good location/good outfit. You can't stop people from hyping what they like.

i have learned that to get hypes, you really just need to get your look seen by as many people as possible. post it in the 'newest look' thread, comment and hype and fan as much as possible, and take part in forums... if nobody knows you're here, they can't very well hype your looks.
sucks in the beginning when you have no karma though, and not everyone can even see your looks.

good photography doesn't mean you should use a really really good quality camera. you can use a regular digital camera. I use my blackberry to take pictures. Just edit your photos good enough to attract people with your look.
really show off what you got. If you;re wearing this great earrings, show them. If you're wearing this really good backless dress, show your back.
really look at other looks and hype+comment them, participate in forums. Suck it up.

The ideal way to get hyped:

Be Asian or Scandinavian
Be slim
Be pretty
Have expensive clothes
Have professional photography skills/ a photographer on hand
Have access to somewhere pretty outside, ideally a woodland/ park area, or a pretty interior
Be able to pose like you're in a magazine

Unfortunately I'm a chubby, average English girl with hair John Frieda would cry from yet to start work and living in her mother-in-law's unfashionably decorated house with a graphic design A level wasted on no discernible photography/ editing skills.

When I start work I'll be too busy to eat and I'll be able to afford £500 on a white t shirt and skinny jeans. Then I'll watch the hypes roll in.

I only look at the new page, with karma filter off. I don't look at hypes or photography. If I look at the outfit, I hype. In fact, I'm more likely to hype an outfit with little attention than one with five billion hypes. Sometimes the more hype there is, the more I'm put off. I tend to think "They don't need one more".

What you say sounds really pessimistic to me but I grant you that you're unfortunately not this wrong. However, I do think that everyone can get noticed by posting comments (& useful ones) on other looks. + people often rate a picture from what they see ; the setting is sometimes more important than the oufit in itself.

Haha maybe I was a bit cynical! (Not that I'm jealous or anything, of course...)

You're right, it is all about the initial first impression. Which is why (cynicism aside) looking good and having an interesting photo works wonders.

The good news is that it is attainable if you are willing to put effort in with getting fit (not necessarily slim), maintaining your looks, saving for statement pieces and teaching yourself photography skills. I plan on getting there eventually.

I was feeling pretty cynical that day.

However, a couple of months later and I've got a lot more hype. I've even appeared on the Hot page (very very low down, but there nonetheless!).

My growth was down to practice and perserverance. Just keep going. It might seem like nobody is paying attention but keep active in the forums, comment on people's looks and generally make yourself seen in a positive, non-spammy way.

As you keep going, your own style will develop and you'll improve with taking photos/ editing. It's just a matter of waiting for it to happen.
