I always wanted to know what people are thinking of Switzerland.... I travelled a lot and when i said that i am from Switzerland, they always confound it with Sweden. So i think that a lot of people don't know Switzerland very well.

Switzerland has the most sensible gun laws on the planet.
An armed populace DOES NOT get fucked over by their government like people do here.

Last winter I went to Bern. It is a beautiful city but I saw almost olnly old people on the streets. Then I thought it is the best city for +40 years old people:) But my friend who lives there told me that I should come in summer to see more young people around. And she said there is a huge difference between summer and winter in Switzerland.

I had the opportunity to move there which I FOR SOME CRAZY REASON DIDN'T WANT AT THE TIME. But now I want to live there so bad. I mean, my two favorite things, snowboarding and chocolate, what else do you need?

Off the top of my head: clocks, banks, mountains, valleys, multilingualism, antipathy towards immigrants, chocolate, and a peculiar dislike of minarets.

Relax, I decided to post something besides all the "OMG SWITZERLAND IS SO AWESUMZ" posts that don't actually contain many concrete nouns besides "chocolate." A string of nouns is hardly an opinion or a view. (and most of the nouns I listed are nice things, don't you think?)
I've never been there, though I might hit it up on my way to Italy if my travel plans work out. Maybe I'll make a bunch of prints of pretty minarets and wheatpaste them onto walls, could be fun.
If it makes you feel better, yes, I also associate massive atom smashers with Switzerland.

next time better inform yourself a little about the world and the topic you're speaking (sht) about and think first before writing, thanks.
1. the majority of the swiss people haven't got any antipathy about immigrants at all, the ones who have this are SVP (extremly conservative (and idiots)) guys.
2. dislike of minarets? wtf? same topic, also something of the SVP and just not true. the majority of the people we're quite shocked, when the minarets got banned.
3. massive atom smashers? that's just ridiculous.
4. I know that you're trying to make fun off me, but it's important for me that other people, who're reading this don't believe what you're saying is true. maybe you think it's funny, but it's not.
obviously you have no clue about switzerland.
yes it's true: we're famous for our chocolate, watches, the UBS and the nature, like valleys and mountains. we're very multilingual, everybody here has to learn about 3 languages in school or more. I'm able to speak 7 quite fluently.
but those "negative" points just aren't true.
I don't want to say Switzerland is perfect, there are many things I don't like about it myself but it's important for me that you and the others on lb understand that you're talking sht about Switzerland.

Oh laydee, I never specified the predominance of the nouns I listed. In fact, I actually think Switzerland is made up of 98% chocolate, 1.6% minaret dislike, and trace amounts of antipathy towards immigrants, processed on surfaces that come into contact with nuts.
If you think I'm making fun of you or proclaiming my hatred of Switzerland...
Doncha know what atom smashers are? Switzerland hosts part of the Large Hadron Collider, which is awesome to the power of awesome. I thought you would have liked that I threw that in. Heart = broken. :(
I could also list rising gun crime, because it exists. Antipathy towards immigrants exists. A demonization of the image of minarets exists. Rape exists. Child abuse exists. In Switzerland. Sounds a lot like the rest of the world.
You really really really missed the point of my post, and I'm trying to make it clear to you without making you think I'm trying to trick everyone on the internet into hating Switzerland. Caaaaaaalm down.

Lol at the conversation above :)
Due to the fact that I've never been to Switzerland. I can only tell my (not so well founded) stereotypes.
The first thing that comes to my mind is chocolate and clocks (because I love chocolate, and my dad is very intressted in Swiss watches). After that I remember something about a very old-fashioned government. One thing that bothers me is that women didn't get the right to vote until 1990 or something like that.
Otherwise I believe that it's a beautiful country with great nature and old buildings :)

There are a lot of things I love about Switzerland: amongst all of the typical things that one would mention like the chocolate, the cheese, the stunning views that the backdrop on the Alps provides, etc. But what I also love about Switzerland is the fact that the people are genuinely world class. Sure they may not warm up to your dialogue initially, but that's also because Switzerland gets tons of tourism as well which confuses the idea of potential friend or just someone you'll see occasionally because they're vacationing.
You have the classic towns like Zürich, Gevena, Lausanne, Lugano, Bern, Basel, Neuchâtel, Ticino etc, but then there are so many other places like Davos, Zug, Valais, the Graubünden canton region, and jewels like Wengen!
Long story short, there are a bunch of things I like about Switzerland even though it may have its minute faults (though you have to admit it, every place does), the positives definitely outweigh the negatives.

I absolutely adore Switzerland!! =D
I think I spent the best summers of my life there!!! I felt in love whit this country the first time I went to Zurich whith my mum and I was only 11 at the time!
I've been to Geneva, Lausanne, Montreux, Gstaad, Neuchâtel, Zermatt , Leysin, St.Moritz, Zug, Wengen and Rolle since. I really want to visit Lugano and the Ticino region.
The last time I was there it was in Basel visiting a friend and hopefully going back soon for ski in the Alps and during the summer for 6 weeks!! oh...and I am also planning to study there in the future!! ;D

When I lived in the states they kept confusing it with sweden too... ah well. Even though I was really shocked about the outcome of the minaret initiative, I like our democratic system. I just wish that people would form an opinion based on facts and not just fear of violent people...
Since I'm swiss-american and grew up between the cultures, I can kind of see the pros and cons of both cultures. What annoys me about us swiss people is the lack of openness when it comes to meeting people, you can't usually strike up a conversation (I too am too shy to start a conversation!), people usually think you want something from them, or you're crazy or violent or idk, something like that...
what I really like about switzerland though is that stuff works. It just does. if you send a letter to someone and get the street wrong, it'll get to them anyway. my dad send me a letter to the states and got the house number wrong (by like, 2 digits) and it got sent back! just an example. it's the little things that work. But: in the states, if you're good at something and you work hard, you can make it (and fast too!), I don't think that's true for most jobs in switzerland..
and then the difference between the school systems is a whole other story.. ah, didn't mean to rant like this haha, but I was surprised to find this topic!

i live in switzerland it's pretty, safe but it can get a little boring if you're a student just because it's expensive and there's not a lot of things to do that i like - shopping, concerts etc. But i do appreciate the beauty around me every day and love how i can open the door and ski down to a chairlift in 2 mins!

Kudos for the use of Dr Cox.
I don't know much about the politics of Switzerland. Its state of neutrality is quite admirable. When I went there some 6 or so years ago in high school, we did a lot of nice tourist things. Visited a chocolate factory, a spa and lots of glaciers! But I just loved it.
I remember we stayed in a place called 'Les Diablerets'. Had a nice, traditional feel. Very soft. Of course, the views were simply stunning - as was the weather in mid summer. I'm a country girl at heart, so I thought the village was just wonderful.
It's a place I'd most certainly go back to. Likely somewhere else in the French speaking part of the country so I can practice the language!
