This is something that has begun to bother me.
People assuming that just because you can draw and they can't that it's okay to ask for free artwork.
"can you design me one or two tattoos please?"
"Can you make me a portrait?"
"Can i have this drawing?"
"Can you take photographs at my wedding?"
"knit me a sweater"
So i would like to take the opportunity to inform those that are not into creating that if it was so simple to do, then yeah, it could be free i suppose -and sometimes it is!, but until then, if you are not VIP in our lives then most probably you should pay for the time, supplies and talent invested into this craft.
Thank you :P

Fyeahartstudentowl hits waaaaay too close to home sometimes.
I gladly will make people things if I want to, but I have had some people try to take RIDICULOUS advantage. When I was in high school, this creepy substitute teacher tried soliciting us art students for drawings of these characters he was trying to turn into toys and then market (describing them with sometimes racist undertones didn't make the prospect any more attractive). Didn't want to pay us shit, but he thought it was acceptable to demand things of us through email even after we said no to it. And because he was in a position of authority, that just made it all the more douchebaggy.

i agree 100%, especially when they think their little drawing should take priority over university work.
Because i obviously have nothing better to do.

prffft of course, it doesn't take you ANYTHING at all to do that one little drawing. I also find it funny how some people seem to think that they DESERVE a portrait, that they inspire.
"You should draw me"
Really? you should pay first.

I like how people feel that drawing is something extremely trivial and five-minute-ish.
Today my class spent the day drawing outside and I heard comments such as 'Is this a class? They're just doodling...'

this happened to me, literally just last night. This dude was like, could you draw my album art work (for his self released CD thing)? And he gave me these frighteningly detailed reference pictures of demons and angels and shit. I was clearly not going to get paid, he needed it soon, and it's exam/revision season. So I just said that I wasn't a good enough artist to do the job. Which is true, those refs were insane.

oh my days... I'm like everyone else here... this is literally my life in a freaking nutshell!!!! It's the one downside to having an abnormal ability at something.... My most annoying thing is if everyone is going out and getting drunk and we do 'pen night' where everyone wears blank tshirts and everyone draws/defaces each other... I spend 4/5ths of the night drawing on people and the rest of the time pretending I don't have a pen.... "Draw on me!!".."what do you want?".... "I don't know...something good"....
And then yeah, the rest of my normal life is just like everyone elses... just draw me something... yeah.. of course... ooorrr.... how about i just carry on living my life?? that cool with you??
great topic Karime... brilliant....
if anyones interested... i just some of my random drawings (THAT I DO FOR ME!!) on my tumblr... then the rest of my tumblr is my photography and clothing label...

Like Ellis i would not mind giving away random sketches to friends. I'd ask them first before throwing them away.
But asking me to design a swallow and stars tattoo for somebody that just added me on DeviantArt is just asking for a block button.

that's why I never show anything that I made, even though people keep asking me to show them sketches that I do at school ...and than they go:" Come on show it! I'm sure it's not ugly." ..I know it's not and that's why I'm not showing you because you will be demanding to draw something for you (and that sounded like I think that I'm the most amazing artist on the planet which I'm not but anyways)

Simple calculation... minimum wage x hours you've worked on the piece + cost of materials. If you want to start selling work, this gives you a reasonable, cheap beginning point, so that you're not screwing yourself over or pricing your work so high that no one will buy it. That is, if you want to sell it... and if you want to sell it, make sure you have really high-quality photos first.
Another option is making prints of your work and selling those, if you don't want to let go of the original. You can sell those for even cheaper than the original; several of my friends do this and it works out for a little extra cash on the side.

Some people think it's a compliment to ask you to do artwork for them, and I think that a lot of people aren't serious when they ask about it. Also, if you haven't sold a piece before you gotta do it for cheap to establish yourself as an artist or you won't have any money at all to pay for art supplies. I guess I don't see it as as big of an insult, mostly because people are pretty harmless as far as their insulting your talent goes. I find that not being secretive is the best, because then at least people aren't blown away when they see a piece for the first time; it will look more like you are a consistently good artist.
Anyways, my take.

The problem is that sometimes showing new or even old friends your sketchbook will lead to that oh wow, so original request:
"YOU SHOULD DRAW ME LOL!"
And then they look at you as if waiting for you to suddenly realize they are the muse you have always been waiting for. Oh gee golly gee!

Yes, its happened to me, heheh, several people have told me that they want artwork from me but when i tell them that prices would depend on the medium, size and level of skill required they slowly begin to blend into the background and eventually stop giving me information about their request. And its not as if i was charging them a lot because, hey, i want to do some work and i like to be nice to people.
But i guess they want a realistic portrait for a Hobby Lobby price.

So because you are an "artist" (except that noone heard of you before) you will ask for money from your friends for some drunk pictures on their bodies? That is pathetic.
All of you knew that being an artist is a fucking hard life, and yeah, random people come up like "draw to me", i don't even think it's serious. And if it's a friend, ask for the material you need, they will understand, unless you have shit friends.
It is a headache, cuz you will be asked for doing some shit job for money, and you will be asked for great works for free. Artist or bitch?

Well, first, you can be an artist even if no one has heard of you before, remember that there are really not many rules to follow regarding arts so being famous is not relevant.
I don't see what the "drunk pictures on their bodies" part meant as i personally don't do body painting. I don't know about the other people here though, you may have to ask them.
And both good and bad friends overlook the fact that, like you say, we need materials, time and effort to put into a piece of art so therefore we should be remunerated but as soon as a price is mentioned, they realize that they don't want artwork bad enough to pay for it and it can happen to both good and bad friends like i just mentioned, not everybody has cash on hand. It is not about shitty friends.
And yes, everybody here knew of the hardships of being an artist, but that does not mean that we cannot complain about the lack of propriety out there. If we don't inform the customer, the people, then we won't see chance.
Complaining is only natural, hell, do you mean that if a slave complained about the hardships of being a slave then this person is "bitching" because he/she knew right form the start about slave life being so hard?
Complaining about potential exploitation has nothing to do with being a bitch.
You obviously have never been put in this positionhave you? Do you even know what you're talking about?

Yeah, I get this sometimes with photography.
I know I'm only 15, but I have this particular friend who asked me to take photo's to send to an agency.
I had done a shoot with her before, just for fun. but she suddenly assumed she was my favourite model and I would practically pay HER to shoot. Jeez.
And its not like I'm a particularly amazing photographer, but just because I enjoy it, and spend time editing the photos, that makes people think I'm some arrogant teen who thinks they're the next big photo-thing.
JUST BECAUSE I HAVE A CREATIVE HOBBY. FKU.

Totally agree. I do a lot of portraits and as I want to carry art on at uni and as a career etc. I get people nagging me for portraits and tattoo designs. I'll only do them for my closest friends and they don't have to pay. But someone I've only spoken to once, not if I'm gonna have money. I mean even my mum offered to buy one of Audrey Hepburn off me, so why should people I don't know get it for free.
The most annoying one I've had recently is someone wanted me to design a tat for them, I'd already designed one for free, but they told me exactly what they wanted, so it was like a half hour sketch. But they asked me to design one for the top of there arm, when I asked what they wanted it to be like they're reply was "whatever you think will look good" I don't have time whilst finishing my sixthform studies, applying and going to interviews for uni's, revising like mad, and doing my own artwork and having some time for myself to design a tattoo with no inspiration or basic idea whatsoever! Rant over haha :)

The problem is when they tell you "just put whatever you want, you're the creative one!".
So then you show them what you came up with.
And then they want changes on that FREE DESIGN YOU DID ON YOUR SPARE TIME.
