I'm pretty sure there has to be a few people here who watch anime besides me. I'm not obsessed with it or anything but I don't automatically cross it out just for what it is. I've actually watched a bunch of series.
That being said, does anybody here have any recommendations?
I want a story with depth and maybe some tragedy but a tiny little bit of humor.
I’m thinking Code Geass, Gantz, The Girl who Leapt through Time/Toki ni kakeru wo shoujo, maybe Elfen Lied but with something different.
I’d really like a high school or college/adult (as in character lives by him/herself) setting and plot:) Thanks

Yes! I LOVE anime! I can give you a lot of good recommendations!
For stories with depth/tragedy:
- Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
- Umineko no Naku Koro ni
Higurashi and Umineko are along the lines of Elfen Lied, but both revolve around a murder mystery. In Higurashi, many of the characters live by themselves too. They are seperate series created by the same team, and I would recommend watching Higurashi first (because it's better :D). I love both of them and found myself absolutely engrossed in the story. They are also slightly humourous.
- Evangelion (Eva)
Evangelion is a classic anime which is set in the future, which focuses on alien attacks on Earth. It covers many aspects of tragedy, and is also quite deep.
- H20: Footprints in the Sand
H2O focuses around a blind boy who moves to a new town and settles into a new life. He befriends a girl who is universally hated by the whole town, and is focuses on the impact each other have on each other. It has plenty of tragedy, depth and humour throughout the series. There is a strong emphasis on the girl living in a seculded area by herself.
- Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is one of the most deep and involving animes I have ever watched. It focuses on two brothers set in a fantasy world as they try and get their bodies back after a failed alchemy experiment to revive their mother. There are humourous moments, as well as a good deal of tragedy.
- Angel Beats
Set in a sort of afterlife world, a group of teenagers who have died are pitted against a strange force as they try to find out what their purpose is. I highly recommend this anime, its humourous, tragic and full of action.
-Kanon
-Clannad
These animes are quite similar, all focusing around a boy who gets to know different girls and creates very strong bonds with them. In Kanon, the protagonist moves to a new town, where as the protagonist is already from that town, but both of them are quite solitary. These animes are made by the same company (they also made Angel Beats) and I cried in both of these as you really get a strong bond with the characters. There is a lot of tragedy in both of them, and there is a lot of humour. I recommend Kanon over Clannad if you only want to check out one, since I found a few of the characters in Clannad a little annoying.
- Chrono Crusade
Set in a 1930's timeframe in a world, this anime is full of demons etc. This anime also made me cry as I felt so attached to the characters, but there are still bits of humour scattered in each episode.
- My Hime
- My Otome
They are really excellent animes filled with humour, tragedy and depth, with the characters living in high school/college environments by themselves. They are both stand alone series, but set in paralell universes (many of the same characters feature in both). I would put these as two of my absolute favourite series.
That's all I can think of for now... You might also want to look at Ef- A Tale of Memories/Melodies, they are tragic, but I didn't find them overly humourous or particularly deep. Most of the characters in those series live by themselves if you are interested. Still worth a watch though :)

Otogi Zoshi is one I'd always recommend, its got the most gorgeous art , rather realistic more than stylized. The story is interesting in that it has 2 arcs, one in the Heian period and one in the modern world. It revolves around a girl named Hikaru and her companions and them trying to divert destruction by retrieveing these powerful elemental talismans called magatama.
Its pretty straightforward action stuff in the beginning which is still pretty intriguing anyway especially if you're into cultural mythology and supernatural themes like in some of Hayao Miyazaki's work, but it really picks up during the second arc where the characters seem to reincarnate in modern Japan(Hikaru is now a highschool student slash landlady of a cheap apartment block) and have to deal with the residual energy of the first magatama crisis. So its all parallel dimensions, strange shifts in time and space, what look like ghosts... I don't want to give too much away but I highly recommend you check it out :)
Other recommendations:
Neia Under Seven- humourous out of the ordinary extraterrestrial story, with a poverty-stricken cram student and an out cast alien.
Honey and Clover- may seem a bit fluffy but the characters actually get to you, also rather accurate art school life portrayal.

No problems :)
I found Eva slightly difficult to get into, but once I watched a fair amount of it I really wanted to find out what happened at the end. Keep in mind that with Eva, there are the original series, but there is also a remake spread across several movies. I would recommend watching the series up until the last 2 episodes or so, and then watch the last movie (since the ending is way less confusing).
I would recommend watching Kanon before Clannad, beause its a lot shorter and much easier to get into. With Clannad I felt that it just went on for too long, and I wasn't a fan of the music particularly.
You might want to look out for Air if you liked Kanon and Clannad - it's made by the same company (there is even a cameo of a few of the Kanon characters in it).

I haven't watched any anime in a long time, and even then it wasn't a lot, but if it's manga I could help you out.

If that's the case... :o
mangafox.com/manga/rinjin_13_gou/
The art style's not very typical of anime and kind of "ugly" but I really like the story. There's also a live-action movie adaptation.
Also I don't know how you feel about yaoi but I really like the style of this: mangafox.com/manga/copernicus_breathing/
And let me also say I am NOT a yaoi fan, ahah. The yaoi in this manga is kind of secondary to the rest of the plot.
There are probably more I can't remember since I don't save them once I'm done reading all the new chapters, but I'll let you know if I remember~

The three best anime series in the world IMO, are Black Lagoon, Cowboy Bebop and Fullmetal Alchemist.
Obviously the best movies are Studio Ghibli's, plus Millennium Actress, Paprika, The girl who leapt through time and some others which I've obviously forgotten D:

Satoshi Kon films are great-- Millenium Actress and Paprika are both incredible! I assume you've already seen Akira? And Cowboy Bebop? The animated version of Metropolis is actually pretty good too. I haven't really kept up with anime recently so I can't think of anything 'current,' but .Hack//SIGN is superb! As is FLCL, if you're looking for something a little more absurd/surrealist. And everyone has already been suggesting Eva, which is amazing (although I hated the films and found most of them were total cop-outs). I've also heard great things about Ghost in the Shell, and can't wait to check it out! Unfortunately I can only find horrible dubbed versions and am waiting for a subtitled one...
