I'm an aspiring classical musician, so naturally I love classical music. Especially music from the romantic, modern, and contemporary period (1700-present).

My current obsession is Philip Glass, often noted as the father of contemporary minimalist music. :)

Follow me at conslancio.tumblr.com/ It's all about music and fashion, and I just posted up a movement from Philip Glass' Glassworks, it's really beautiful.

So, what about you guys? What's your take on classical music, be it baroque (1600-1750), classical (1700-1800), romantic (1800-1910), contemporary (1950-present), or in general?

I'm somewhat fond of it...there was a point in my life where I ONLY listened to classical like some sort of elitist snob(when I was 12 or 13)....I still have a bunch of classical on vinyl.

Philip Glass is awesome...I'm actually quite a fan of avant-garde minimalist & microtonal music.....especially the stuff involving non classical insturmentation(synthesizers, sequencers, detuned guitars) while this might not be seen by classical music purists as legitmate...fuck what they think....I could overpower the volume levels of an entire orchestra with my guitar, amps & pedal collection....and so could this guy....

I don't listen to it for fun, but I like playing it -- especially when part of an orchestra -- it makes me feel so fancy! Baroque is my favorite, & I really like Bach and Vivaldi. (I play cello.)

i like it. i dont listen to it regularly though; i like it best when doing certain things, like studying, reading or trying to fall asleep. my dad used to listen to it all the time, especially when driving (at full blast at that). i like to listen to piano solos and 'classic' classical music like mozart and vivaldi.

It's like saying Rock music or Electronica. There are many types. So I guess I'd say I like some of it. Some compostitions by Wagner, Handoll, beethoven, Bach, Mozart. MANY MANY people, but I think the best stuff is by people with incomprehensable names.

PS I wake up to Classic FM every morning and I <3 it.

however the on piece I hate that irritates me when I listen to it is the Baroque piece, Pachelbel's Canon in D.

it's just, it's just really annoying ._. and what's worse is you'll hear it in pop music too.

I also love Philip Glass, and love almost everything you posted here!! The work Glass does for films is spectacular. His compositions from the movie The Hours are incredible. I also love Steve Reich, perhaps even more than Glass; he might be a little 'out there' for many people, and he's a harder sell, but his Different Trains series and the album based on parts of the Bible are just so haunting... the Trains one especially so because it was based on WWII and the Holocaust, with the three parts representing pre-war, during-war, and post-war.

I love classical music. I was brought up on it, and even though my family was poor, I was taught to distinguish between Saint-Saens and Tchaikovsky before the age of 8. I remember playing the "guess the composer" game in the car (I've only recently begun to win at the game, haha). Although as a kid I loved the romantics and anything 19th century (I also played piano for many years), during and after college I got extremely into more abstract stuff like Schoenberg and Scriabin, although unfortunately it's way harder to find concerts for either of those two compared to the more beloved romantics. I would probably kill to see Pierrot Lunaire performed.

I can't imagine that anyone can HATE classical music.
It's like hating puppies or fluffy bunnies wtf.

My favourite composer is Lully, thus Le Roi Danse is one of my favourite movies.
His music is so majestic and every single piece of him is a masterpiece.
But if you aren't a fan of baroque, I don't think you'll enjoy it as much as I do.

I know I really should absolutely love classical music because there's no other way I could've endured violin without doing so, but I'm mostly indifferent to most classical music. :/ It just doesn't do it for me. I can only stand listening to it if I've played/studied the piece before and I have that emotional attachment and inside knowledge in place.

Since I'm a piano player I fell in love with classical music right that moment when I started playing. I especially like piano and cello music (wanted to learn cello) and lately classical guitar.

I can't really name my favorite composers but I really like Erik Satie, Kapustin, Maxence Cyrin, Philip Glass, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Yann Tiersen, George Winston, Henri Dutilleux and Wim Mertens.
Of course there are all the time classics such as Beethowen, Bach, Chopin, Debussy.

I also really like works of Wagner, Brahms, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and some other (can't remember now) but I'm sure I forgot someone.

I can listen to classical music all day long. It's the only music on the world that never gives you headache (except silent, voice or meditation music). I mean...I can listen to all kind of music from industrial and hard rock to pop but my educated taste in music always search for exceptional lyrics and the beat that can pull out some kind of emotion. I guess classical music taught me to appreciate the beast from any other music genre. I've learned that all classical music educated people have the same ability to pick really exceptional now days music. And our taste is also pretty much the same.

Well one thing is for sure classical music can be listen to any time of day at any place and even any occasion. My parties sometimes begin and and with classical and ppl really get surprised how good it sounds.

I'm not saying that listening to classical makes one an elitist snob....I'm just saying that that is how others, especially people who listen to gentrified, top 40, 4/4 time signature shitty pop music(the kind of music with a bass drum line going "DOUCH-DOUCH-DOUCH-DOUCH-DOUCH-DOUCH-DOUCH-DOUCH-DOUCH-DOUCH-DOUCH-DOUCH-DOUCH-DOUCH-DOUCH-DOUCH") might feel about it.

I am merely basing this off of my own experiences when I was in elementary school and listened almost exclusively to classical.....which considering the kind of music that was popular with youth in the late 1990s/ early 2000's(shitty pop punk, shitty electro pop)...its probably good that I formulated my own musical taste instead of hopping onto all of the different mediocre musical bandwagons that have appeared in the last few years. I don't view my musical choices as 'snobby' per say, but I can say with quite a bit of certainty that I have taken alot of shit from people who think that its wrong that I'm not listening to the same rubbish they are....I'm not the only one who has experienced this...my one bandmate ironically used to almost exclusively listen to classical music when he was in elementary school, my other bandmate is a classically trained violinist & double bassist.....I am more than certain that if my associates or I hadn't listened to classical during our formative years; that we would be making the same kind of generic, shitty sounding 4/4 music that damn near everyone else makes.

At this point in my life.....I couldn't imagine listening to ONLY classical music...that would be just sad considering all of the sludge metal & psych rock that is being played, being made. It might have something to do with not being in the Baroque or Romantic era...we are in a new era, with new music that needs to be made & heard in order to have full effect.

At least we're not talking about Gabber or Happy Hardcore *shudders* if that were the case, I would likely find it impossible to shield or mask my disgust.

That's funny I was kind of the opposite. I didn't really 'get' classical music until I was about fourteen, when I started listening to Mozart sonatas. It was listening to this: youtube.com/watch?v=XOuv-e2X7vo, when something just clicked in my brain. I just felt a connection with the music, and I've loved Mozart ever since. I do enjoy other genres of music though, but I don't feel the need to compare them to classical. I just acknowledge their differences.
