I'm debating if I should read "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins.

my annoying as fuck, bratty teenybopper step-cousin will not shut up about these books. I have heard good things about them but the fact that she likes them turns me off.
if you do, it sounds like it would be better to read them before the movie comes out.

I read the Hunger Games when it was called Battle Royale. By Koushun Takami. You should read it. Much better than Hunger Games.
I promise. I read both. Battle Royale is the bigger, badder, better mommy of the Hunger Games. Unless you're into that YA kind of stuff... o_o

I actually love the Hunger Games, and a few of my friends as well as my sister did too. However, it is kind of a YA thing as Cassandra said, so it may not be for everyone.
I think it'd be worth a try though!

It's good but shame it's all about to be butchered when it hits the big screen as they're trying to make it a twilight-esque thing.
It's a good story although the third book literally made me want to kill myself by the time I read it because it was so depressing, incredibly addictive though. I read all of them one after the other.

I almost kinda prefer Hunger Games, in a way, simply because it's YA. It's easy to write that scenario for adults, because adults are... well, adults. We've seen it all, we've experienced it all, and when it comes to fiction, we expect that now and then we'll see brutal stuff. Having that toned down - but left very visceral - for teens, and have the same messages, and same imagery, communicated maturely to a younger audience is fascinatingly good writing.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough! The series... not so much. Unfortunately, Collins isn't the greatest writer on the planet. Very average, which there's nothing wrong with. And I just wasn't terribly happy with the direction she decided to take the series.
That being said, Hunger Games is a must-read in YA fiction, and dystopic fiction. I would say more, but a friend of mine on Twitter said it all perfectly a few days ago.
"Just finished the first Hunger Games book. Deeply flawed, averagely written, wholly unoriginal, and one of the best books I've ever read."

I'd definitely read the first one, especially before the film comes out. The film does actually look really good and true to the book.
But I agree with the person above who said that the book was great, the whole series not so much.

I agree with pretty much everyone on here. The first book was really enjoyable and I read it in one night. They just got progressively worse after that, and the third book was kind of awful. It gets into angst-y teen territory a little too much. And it's really depressing. But it's worth a read because it's so popular and I'm looking forward to the movie.

The writing style comes off as a little childish to me, but once you get used to each and every sentence being about 10 words long, its actually a good book. I enjoyed it, although it gradually becomes more (like Stefanie M. said) angsty teenager-ish. Which is completely plausible considering anyone who just got thrown into an arena to fight to the death wouldn't exactly come out smiling and spurting out rainbows and ponies.
I recommend you at least give it a go. Everyone I know, including myself, who has read it enjoyed it.
Although (SPOILER) by the end of the series Suzanne has killed off just about every character I came to love. That was disappointing and ruined it a bit for me.

I've read the first and second, and can't wait to read the third.
I did think the second was progressively worse, but still addictive, and definitely worth a read.
I saw the film trailer and HAD to read the book, but can't wait to see that either.
I love the idea, and the whole book imo, has an eery, creepy feeling, playing on the human fascination with other peoples pain and hardship (though obviously exaggerated).
Yeah, love em, although flawed. :)

I loved them. But I'm a teenager, and that's the target audience of these books. It's basically a rip off of Battle Royale but one thing I really respect about these books are that they are encouraging a lot more young adults to appreciate reading more. There are so many people I know who have never been book worms but after reading the first book, they begin to rekindle their love of sitting down with a book verses mindlessly staring at Facebook all the time. As Chris F said above, it is the theme throughout the books that really makes the series. After reading the entire series, I truly felt changed in a way with my perception of reality, government and control, and what freedom truly means. For young adults in an increasingly technologically focused society to be challenged to explore their views on these issues is something to be commended. You don't see many books these days written for young adults that aren't about the typical boy meets girl high school love story.
The writing is not that challenging to read, but the message is something that everyone of all ages can appreciate! :)

the second book (Catching Fire) was definitely the best of all three! it was much faster than the other ones, it jumped right into the interesting parts. I think the writing is a little weak, but the story is amazing!

I'm reading the third book right now and I'm obsessed with those books! I think it's amazing. And who care's about "Battle Royale"..? Also an amazing book but it can be compared with "Lord Of The Flies". Come on. Those books are all fantastic. And I think nowadays it IS very difficult to find something, which is at least 80% new.
I'm so excited to see the movie, then since Harry Potter no other fantasy book thrilled me more!

If you want some good fantasy, try Philip Pullman's His Dark Material's trilogy. Much darker than Potter, lots of atheistic undertones, fairly trippy. Good stuff. :]

When something gets hyped as much like Hunger Games, it's easy to hate it purely for that reason, especially with that film coming out, and how it's always put in the same box as Twilight.
But I did read it and I really enjoyed it. Very addictive. Of course it's not a masterpiece of literature, and it reeeeeeeks of teen fiction, but it's a riveting read.
DO read it before the film comes out. DO NOT WAIT until every image in your mind is corrupted by the film forcing itself upon your imagination.
(I tried to read the Gone series because a friend highly recommended it. I got half way through and gave up because I thought it was sh!t. Waaaaay too American for me, and though HG is American too it's not forced in my face. I started the Uglies series (Westerfeld) which seems to be made of similar stuff to HG, and I liked it until someone stole it from the library...)

I liked the first one for sure. It had just the right amount of sadness, scariness, and death but also it had a really sweet romance thing that even I got butterflies from by just reading about it! But the first one is definitely the best out of all three. The second takes a while to rev up, and I haven't even been interested in the third. Snorrreefest..BUT ya, go for it.

I wanted to read it because it reminded me of the Battle Royale movie which I loved and I love that whole idea of just putting a bunch of people in an "arena" and having them fight to the death.
But now I think I'll just wait for the movie lol

YES! It's one of my favorite books! I know the beginning is slow, but once you read it, its worth it and it picks up speed pretty quickly. It's action packed and sort of a "what if" scenario. I agree with Melanie, I couldn't put it down once I started reading it!

I read it three years ago and I've fallen in love with it. But I don't like the idea of making the Hunger Games movie, it will destroy all of the images created in my mind during reading it. And it will probably turn into something like Twilight, with all these screaming 13-year-olds etc.

These books were highly recommended to me by a few friends. The way they described them for me pretty excited so I went and bought them.
I wasn't aware they were aimed at young adults. I assumed they were a more mature series due to their content.
I read all three in under a fortnight.
I enjoyed them. I wouldn't rave about them like some people do however.
I found that they read quite easily. Which I don't like so much but I guess they are for teenagers for a reason.

i've read the first and second books from the series. I loved them but then again i usually like to read books to help me relax. haha my weapon of choice is usually teen fiction and this definitely fit that description. Although i did find it hard to stop reading. All in all good books but nothing spectacular.
