Is it possible to make white leather boots black?

I have a pair of slightly-too-big, gently used white 1460 Doc Martens boots that I thought looked cool in white, but turned out to be a regrettable purchase, as they don't go with anything I own and they make my feet look big.

I've never tried dyeing my shoes so I don't think I'll be much help but if I were you I'd just sell them and buy a new pair in black. Dyeing it black might just make it look worse because it might turn out to be really sloppy and the dye could just end up fading after a while. It seems too much of a hassle to dye it and it might not even turn out nice.

That's kind of what I'm afraid of; and then if they end up looking like crap then I'm really out of luck because then I won't wear them and can't sell them ... but there's no guarantee anyone will want to buy my used white docs!

eHow has a tutorial for dying white leather shoes black, so you're in luck.

Thanks for the link!
This seems very labor-intensive ... I would be nervous about buying the wrong green dye, and also I need to buy rubber gloves ... It's possible, but I wonder how the cost would compare just to take them to a cobbler?

I believe you can just the stuff to rub on black leather shoes to "clean" it by covering all the lighter patches and scratches, maybe something like that? :)

Yeah I don't think PAINT is the answer. I think it has to be leather dye.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who would buy the white doc martins. If you don't want to sell and get a new pair, maybe go get a professional opinion from a shoe repair guy? They might also be able to do it for you. (also... I <3 the MET!)

I wouldn't try to change them. Just sell them if you really don't like them.

It's possible to dye leather. My father works with leather materials and has all sorts of dyes and products for leather working. I suggest taking it to a cobbler or a local leather dealer to see what can be done for your shoes. Don't be afraid of the cost, generally speaking these sort of things cost a lot less than people think and in the long run it's worth having it done right than doing it yourself and messing it up. They'll also give you a price quote so you can decide if it's worth it for you.

I think it might be cool to use black polish, won't get them solid black but you can totally play around with it and get some cool effects. I've darkened light tan leather boots to make them almost black.

Have you tried heavy coats of patent leather black shoe polish?
