I know nothing about dslr cameras. I took a few photo classes which all involved 35mm and lomo cameras. I need a cheaper but good quality camera. I really wish I could afford a real nice one, but cant :( Is the Canon Powershot SX40 12.1MP good? I want a nice camera to finally take some LB pictures Haha Does anyone own this camera Or do any of you recommend another in the same price range up to $400!

The best way in my opinion to decide if the camera you want is any good.... type in google the name of the camera you want, then after the camera name type ''sample images'' and loads of sites will come up showing you images taken with that particular camera, which helps alot for me. No need for reading, simply look at the results from the camera firsthand. :)

yea the slr will be good, you just have to learn how to use it correctly (as in, exposure, lighting etc). If it's you 1st slr then I wouldn't look for a really high tech one, use this one and then if you want to you can move onto a better one in a few years time. Like I said as long as you know how to use it properly you will get good results :)

Try a used Canon Rebel XS or Rebel XSi. You should be able to find one for $400. They're excellent beginner DSLRs, my first DSLR was actually an XS.
The Canon Powershot you mentioned isn't a DSLR. Its basically a high-end point and shoot camera and won't have anywhere near the versatility or functionality of a DSLR, but for what it is I'm sure it takes good pictures. Don't be fooled by the shape of the camera, my very first digital camera was a Canon Powershot and I was suckered into buying it because the shape of the camera looked like a DSLR. Yes, I was dumb. I'm sure if you looked hard enough you could even find a Canon Rebel T3 on sale or used for around $400.
The G12 you mentioned retails for about $500, and if you were going to get that then I'd suggest you just spring for the Canon Rebel T3 which retails for around $550. But that's my personal opinion.

You should try getting one on ebay... for a long time I shot all my pictures with a Nikkon D60 with a 18-55mm lens (which is the standard lens ) ... the camera was $700 but not it has been replaced by a new model so you can find D60's on ebay for $200 or so ... you can look at my pictures here and see that the quality is really good! the latest ones are with a new camera, but the first ones (Except the one in the limo) are with the D60! I really really recommend this camera!
Tip: try to always take pictures in the daytime if you are using a DSLR. the quality will be a lot better and crisp than at night!
look at my profile so you can see the pictures and judge for yourself :)
