I've always wanted to do open mics, but I have no idea where I'd go to do one.

Sorry if this is directed more towards New Yorkers, but where do you perform, or where did you start performing?

and for those of you who aren't from new york, what was it like performing in front of strangers for the first time?

Open mics, on the street, subway, parks, obscure bars and clubs.

Shitty bars, shitty all ages venues, at a desanctified church turned dance center, house parties, an outdoor ravine in the mountains, the parking lot outside the Anarchist Bookfair, next to an outdoor skateboarding park, down in the riverbank, in a tiny art gallery....these are amoung the places that I have played, only none of them are in any way near NYC.
