I am looking into becoming a professional stylist (personal, or commercial).
I understand that it isn't necessary to have a degree for this career path, but I want to be equipped with as much fashion/styling knowledge as possible. I am having a hard time finding a degree or college that really offers anything that seems to apply to becoming a stylist. Any tips?
Thanks bundles.

Hey Mary!I used to work as a stylist(among other things) in women's magazines for many years.Who said it isn't necessary to have a degree?I have studied painting and fashion design in Athens,Greece.OK,no college can teach you everything. You have to learn all about history of costumes, what they used to wear in Renaissance or in the 20s.Read fashion sites such as style.com,use the internet to search what you need concerning fashion.Visit museums and attend fashion shows. How about making your own book, photographing your own outfits,or borrowing from others, creating a "concept fashion photography" with make-up/styling/hair/location that reminds of a magazine editorial.Think of a theme,a title..You can send it to a magazine you like, with your cv and see what happens.Back at college,we were asked to photograph accessories, create a location, light, props.Try something like this, you have to learn how to photograph clothes and accessories, because in magazines you won't be having a model all the time.
After finishing a college you might find, make business cards and leave some in your favourite (expensive) shops,if you want to be a personal stylist.Always have in mind that in this business, you also need to have connections..
Good luck!Take care

What majors do you suggest for those taking the college path?
