If you get the chance to take a figure sketching class, do it! It really helps to learn the proportions and curves of the body. Also, you might find that you enjoy drawing/highlighting certain parts of the body more than others (large eyes, simple hair, etc.) As for practice, draw images that inspire you, then move onto trendy images. I was never good at drawing humans until I got to college...then I took two fashion illustration classes and turns out the style is really for me! Just be loose with it. Fashion illustration is fantastic because basically anything goes, and your work doesn't have to look super realistic (but that is always appreciated). Experiment with mediums - ink, marker, colored pencil, watercolor, collage, etc. Move your hand quickly and freely! If you mess up, it's fine because it's your own style and provides a neat fashion 'edge'.

Practise!! I started fashion sketching in 2003 and it all looked like shit. Now I have my sketching style down pat and always get nice comments. I agree with Danielle W; don't focus on making it realistic, because fashion and fashion illustration is not. If you're not good at hands/feet/faces, whatever, put the general shape in and don't worry about details. It's the clothes that matter. Hope this helps :)

Practise drawing figures over and over again.
Adding the clothes is the easy bit once the proportions are right.
I had a book on fashion illustration, I think it's called 'Drawing/illustration for fashion design' or something. It's quite good.
Also, if you're a complete beginner you could use a figure template to trace over so you get used to the proportions and become able to draw freehand.

There's lots of tips, designersnexus.com/design/free-fashion-croquis-templates/ here is a place they allow you to download free basic templates I used them until I got more comofrtable being able to draw a croquis in proportion. It takes practice to learn rendering teqchniques, you've been given good advice about checking out other illustators and referncing their work to get a better idea.

Take multiple art classes through out your school multiple years if you can. Maybe extra classes out of school? It gets you into the habit of sketching. Matter of fact I'm taking my second one.

A lot of people who sketch fashion illustrations have there own special way of doing it. I've noticed every silhouette is different, whether it's modern looking, cartoony looking, or just barely drawn and the clothes itself is your imagination and thoughts just thrown on paper. You don't have to be really perfect at it as long as you get your point across, unless you want this to be your profession...then you need to practice and do the best of your ability

I'm a freelance designer and my sketches SUCK. And another thing, what I sketch is never what comes out of what I am making, as I change my mind a lot halfway through the design anyway! So confusking! And my sketches never do my designs justice so I just stopped doing them... For a while I was tracing pictures of stuff, but it never ended up sticking in my brain. Gahhh.

To ASHLEY B

I do that same thing! I usually will do an illustration or something after a photoshoot when the garment is complete and all or else I waste my time as you and change my mind half way through construction. I think illustration is a great skill to have but one that needs to be worked on and practiced a lot, I've already take 3 classes in art and fashion illustration and yeah I'm 100% better then i was when I first started but still amateur level at best.

I'm not so pro at this myself but practicing does help you develop your style & makes illustrating a lot easier.
A few tips from a workshop I did a while back:
- Consider rendering with crosshatching, using different mediums & shading, keeping in mind where the light is hitting/coming from
- When using colour, outline the edges of a garment's shape/silhouette with a common dark colour (i.e. purple for pinks, darker shades) & break it up to create the illusion of light
- Don't overdo the drawing of hair - i.e. drawing every single strand. The idea is to give an impression of the styling, so draw a few guiding lines to establish the shape & texture.
- Use croquis at first for the elongated proportions - some designers use up to a 10-head figure
- Work your way from lighter colours to darker ones & develop it slowly. The same with black & white drawings - i.e. draw lightly
- Don't spend too long on illustrations unless you really think it will be worth it. Some long, swift & less-controlled lines can produce surprisingly refreshing drawings with less effort

All in all, practice is a must. You can start out with sketching models/garments from magazines first & then start developing your own.

Pick up Illustrating Fashion: Concept to Creation, by Stephen Stipelman. That man is so great. Also agree with the rec on 100 years of fashion illustration. My first fashion book was 9 heads, it's kinda like whatever and it's expensive but it was a good intro to understanding fashion sketching, even if the work in it is kinda' meh.

i would like to help you
but i would have to give my ideas to you and i wouldn't like that

but i can tell you what inspiers me... EVERYTHING (smell of coffe, music, when i see something totaly ordinary,...)
just take ideas out of real life, look at everything really closely and from a different point of view than others

the drawing part ... you need to find your own style and trust me everybody can do it

I think it's a good idea to practice textures of fabric and colours first. Try replicating looks you see in magazines to get a feel for the body shapes and the way clothes are draped on the body.
The inspiration will come eventually, I started drawing costume outfits and outrageous dresses first before trying to stay on trend.

I think fashion sketching is about finding your niche, and to be honest it took me forever to get to the somewhat decent place I am now. I don't draw things that I'm weak at and usually most of my sketches don't have arms, I somtimes don't even take time to draw the face lol. here are a few examples of my inadequate work... also one tip PRACTICEPRACTICEPRACTICE!

i started out by using an illustration book and following guide lines
i started then drawing them myself without the guidelines, it's good practice
its also o.k to use a template of one you have already drawn and then practice drawing your clothes on top of that
i started stylizing my figures then by making the legs much longer/the waist a lot smaller/bigger hips/big hair/long eyelashes, all these things help you to see how you like drawing figures and making them different
it's also good to play around with new media's, ink is my new favourite at the moment :)

i think u just need to look at some examples and see how people do it and then start doing it yourself. its really not that hard u just need to get a stensil of the outline of a body even just the silhouette and create whatever u wanna create on their bodys or if u have an idea u just draw on there. just get the basics of clothes like a t-shirt / pants / skirt and then just play around with the shapes/colours/media anything u wanna do. design and see how it works out. dont focus too much on details like face/hair/make up because u can fix all that after or start with details i dont know play around with eyes and body shapes like the legs/arms/torso.
and practice a lot but dont try to draw like someone else, draw like yourself and guud luck!

its all about practices and if you do what other people do it wont be your work because you will start doing it there way i do my figers way diff to other people they come out the classing 18centry way with big hear and beauty spot if you want to get better just picture it in your head and slowly and surely you will get it on paper you just need to find your muse to it they way i learned was through my mum and step mum and art studio and it took me like 10 years before i got good at it "slow learner" and then i turned the looks into my own but fashion is what You want it to be and you Cant take someone elses because then it will all be the same all my looks have my little thing in them small heart, some people put a flower or something on to to show its Theres you just need time your still young

Practising is the only way really. Use the 8 head method and then switch to 9-11 for illustration.
And as for design, find an inspiration and do some life drawings, then use them to design from thinking about what is actually infront of you and how you can interpret it into fashion, or how it reminds you of fashion.

I don't think there is ugly or beautiful sketches, personally I would say it is your inspirations and ideas that does really matter. Just sketch down your ideas and don't bother if you think your sketches are ugly. And if you want your own style of drawing, just practice like everyone else say's!

I'd say it helps to learn life drawing and observational drawing first. Having a good foundation in drawing helps you to render bodies and fabrics, especially how fabric moves around the body, much easier. Don't worry about developing your style when you first start off, your style will start to show when you've got everything down pat and start veering towards what you like the most. I think the most important thing in learning to draw is really to observe people in everyday life and to draw them. You learn a lot more about how fabrics and clothes look if you observe how they actually look in real life.

Practice and sketching from life whenever possible. I'm not a fashion illustrator but I do illustrate mainly people and I think sketching from observation(just the people, enviroment around me) has really helped with my sense of proportions and anatomy as well as develope a sense of style. I think before you clothe a body it is important to understand how it looks and moves underneath the fabric, then you know how cloth would drape above it and what shapes would work. I hope this helps.

I cheat a little - I use figures from the internet- after all, I am mainly interested in the clothes, not figure drawing. It's a good way to get a sketch down superfast if you're worried you'll forget it. They can also be great practice, just google search fashion pose outlines/sketches and you'll get tons of things to practice with.
I have poses and fabric studies stuck all over my roof, it helps to look at them when I get stuck drawing.

well since ur starting (and so am I) you can use templates, if you dont know how to draw body figures yet. (I cheat too) read this:

rewritemyfuriedheart.wordpress.com/2012/04/15/what-ive-been-up-to/

I have link there, a site where you can download some Croquis templates.

I basically trace the body, and draw in the dress/outfit. But Im still practicing on sketching the figures free-hand. Have fun! :)

Try collage, cut up models from magazines or use sillhouettes from the internet - layer either other clothes, or pictures (for example natural shapes like flowers, whatever is inspiring you) or just draw over, or layer tracing paper. Makes it a lot easier if figure drawing isn't your thing at the moment. Just one of the ways we learnt to make design easier at college. To be honest though practice is the key! Have the patience! xxx

the "Contemporary Fashion Illustration Techniques" by Naoki Watanabe is a nice book. I just started working on fashion illustrations and I can tell that practicing every day is the best way to develop your own style.
