I was just wondering what other schools are out there for fashion besides the well known ones: Parsons, FIT, CSM, etc. and whether your school's fashion program is good or not.
I got to VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) in Richmond, VA, which is the number 1 public art school in America. I'm only a freshy, but I'd say the fashion program's pretty good, and pretty hard. It's just going to be nearly impossible to find a decent job unless I move.
I'm also applying to FIT, and Central St. Martins for next fall, so if anyone goes there and could tell me about it, thanks!

Honestly, I've never heard of UCA. I just checked it out, and the student's work looks impressive. Maybe I'll have to consider that school as well.

Even the teachers at my school hadn't heard of it! quite surprised though, as I visited the Epsom campus and all the students were super-friendly and their work was stunning.

i went to FIDM in L.A. for 1 year and frankly, it was VERY hyped up. You paid alot for teachers that were not actually professors, just 'instructors' & classes that let you out over an hour early sometimes, which for that money, is ridiculous.
i think if someone is REALLY serious about fashion design or costume design, FIDM is a decent choice, they know that part of fashion. But alot of the other majors could've been attained at others schools for less money, with more serious students and better teachers.
the majority of the students aren't very dedicated to doing the work to get into the industry...but that's just my opinion :)

oh wow i didnt know that about VCU! I got accepted there for the fall but didnt want to go (i live in md, i wanted to get away from the area). You mind telling me what they expected/ wanted you to already know as a design student? and what makes it hard?
Im considering the art institute in nyc, since thats wear I'll be living soon, or this other school in ny called wood tobe-coburn school (waiting on info about their fash.design program)...both offer associates in fashion design, and are the cheapest and fit my criteria for what I look for in a fash.design program

Well, you start out with a year of art foundations, which is your basic art classes. Then, for sophomore year, you apply to whatever department you want to; fashion design, interior design, film, painting, etc. I'm still in my art foundation year, and it's pretty time consuming. You get to take short project courses though to see what you want to do, so I took the fashion one. There was a lot of work to do in a short amount of time - drawing croquis and designs, and sewing an accessory - but the teacher gave you a lot of direction.
You can come into the program without any knowledge of fashion design, but when you apply sophomore year, they look for fashion design elements in your portfolio. Also, in my fashion design class, everyone was very very talented. I also have friends in fashion merchandising, and they say it's an awesome program and demanding too.
If you got excepted, I'd say come! I chose this school over Pratt and FIDM, and there's a lot of transfers from Pratt, RISD, SCAD, FIT, etc. But yeah, I kinda wanna move to NYC since that's where I'll end up. Now I'm thinking about just going to school up there after I graduate. Hope i helped!

I go to The Academy of Art in San Francisco, and we have a great fashion program here! The school pours a lot of money into the program and it tends to get the spotlight at the school. But, I say, for the best education, head to New York. Don't even waste your time in SF!

oh, and hey other richmond person. (is there ANY job in fashion you could get in this city...?)
My best friend was trying for our required mentorship or senior seminar thing to get one with a fashion design person at VCU; she actually found someone to do it, but then the mentorship leading lady was being the bitch she usually is and was like 'You cannot do that! It is not relevant real world experience! Also, you aren't allowed to take classes at the school of the arts!' which she wouldn't have to do anyway....
i've never seen anyone so mad as she was D:
and, like, they offer us classes that are vcu arts? arft 105/106 and phto 491? So idk what's up with that. And i don't think that had anything to do with anything, but i felt like sharing this story.

you should go to FIDM if you want some of the business side of fashion . they've got great courses .
Lauren Conrad goes there :) lol ..
its a good idea to go to a design school first, then take some courses on the business one so that so you can manage your business later on in the future .

Right now I go to a university and am studying literature. When I graduate, I plan on going to a community college to build up a portfolio and would love to go to CSM because I've only heard good things about it. I know tons of ppl that went to FIDM who wasted lotsa money and ended working at Forever 21 and whatnot, kinda sad. But anyway, I plan on combining a lit major with a fashion-type major and hopefully contributing to a magazine. I know, totally everyone's dream/unrealistic. Def need to do my research about art schools.

Well, for starters, the school is all year round, so that's difficult all in itself. For the next two years you will be in school non-stop with only a week (two weeks for Christmas/Summer break) between each quarter. Most of the teachers are the same ones from F.I.T, so you are getting a pretty top notch education, but the tuition at the Art Institute is like 42,000 while FIT is like 4,000-14,000...that's a big difference (especially since they are historically the better school). And my last warning is don't expect to party much...ever! it's a very stressful school.

Everything is state of the art, and it is definitely a great hands on learning experience. (they push internships/jobs on you alot there, to 'build up your resume')
Frankly, I'm surprised LIM isn't mentioned already on this chat.
I find out by the end of this month if I got in, however I have a good feeling I did :)

I myself am most likely going to the art institute in Chicago, Pratt, or OTIS then transferring to Parsons to save money.

My dream school is FIT, but I pay for school on my own and I can't afford the out of state tuition by myself. My friend went to LIM and transfered after one semester. She said she could take the classes in her sleep thats how easy they were. I saw FIDM and the campus is just beautful. Again, can't afford it :(

I'm applying for FMM at FIT for fall 2012, and I feel quite unsure on what theyr looking for. I'm writing my essay at the moment (also quite new, in Sweden we only apply on grades) and I'm trying to stress that I have great knowledges when it comes to project managment, doing budgets, leadership, etc, since I was president of my student council, and after high school i worked at the largest student organization in Sweden with projects and making contacts with other organizations and companies. I'm quite sure I have experinces that are not that usual for a 20 year old, but I have no official experience of fashion, only a smaller fashion show I did at my school, and I have ok, but not great, grades in match. Do you think it can work? I reeeeaaaally want to get in, would be nice to get some insight from a FIT student :)
